Traffic Jam – Do you really want internet “traffic”?

By Posted in - Blog on November 30th, 2012 0 Comments

I get about six or seven emails a day promoting various tactics for getting traffic to my website.  Some claim I am missing 500 or more “hits” per day.  That I shrug off a junk peddlers peddeling junk, but….

When a client comes to me and says he wants to get traffic for his website, I often get a funny response from my clients.  They say “I want traffic” and I say “Why?” Do you know they have no idea what to say.  They look at me like, why ask “Why?” So, hoping someone will give me something, I repeat “Why?”

Two clients told me in a 24 hour period that it was this single question I asked that closed the deal in my favor.  Most “web design sales guys” say ok.  They launch into a variety of ways the clients can “get traffic.”  The fact that I didn’t is what makes me who I am and makes WEBv5 what it is.  One of the clients said to me I want google traffic (he meant Google Adwords) and facebook traffic, twitter traffic, and I am sure a few others.

So if you think traffic is important please answer me one question.  How much money does traffic make you? Probably nothing. “Oh, but it’s eye balls and visitors” I heard a guy say at a training seminar for geeks like me.  “How much money do eye balls and visitors make you?” I wanted to ask.

Ok, so maybe I am a bit pragmatic, but there is only one measure of success in business.  PROFIT.  I know that sounds cold, but it is true and I didn’t make it that way.  Now please don’t get me wrong.  I give loads to charity.  I believe in compensating those who work for me well.  I am not always trying to cut costs to make more money, I am trying to make more sales.

I don’t care about traffic.  I don’t care about eyeballs.  I care about leads and I care about sales.

Would you rather have 6 really interested super qualified visitors or 1,000,000 people who could care less about your products or services coming to your site?

I know incoming “traffic” helps your “SEO” in some small ways, but if tons of unqualified traffic come to your site and leave quickly it will drive up your “bounce rate” which will actually drive DOWN your SEO.

Old fashioed broadcast marketing was about eye balls and views.  New, narrowcast marketing is about qualified views, qualified leads, and qualified eyeballs.

1,000,000 views earn you nothing.  1 qualified lead could earn you real money.  What do you want?

If what you really want is qualified leads and sales, then WEBv5 may be able to help you get there.  If you want tons of bogus traffic then I might suggest you go elsewhere.
